The one question that we can guarantee being asked when working with clients is – Where can I find images to use on my website that are free…? (and legal to use!)

It’s always better to be original and try and use your own images (that you own or have taken yourself) on your site, but obviously this isn’t always realistic or practicable. If you do decide to use images that are not your own then make sure you check the copyright restrictions on any photos you use on your site.

If you are using a paid service such as Shutterstock or Getty Images then things are usually pretty straightforward – You pay for the right to use an image in a certain way & as long as you follow the rules you will be fine, however if you need more than a few images then this route can work out quite expensive.

So the chances are you ( and who wouldn’t) will want go down the route of using free stock images before parting with your hard earned cash. Using free stock images, while saving you money, is however a little more complicated & it can sometimes be difficult to know exactly where and how you can use the images and also if you need to attribute the owner of the image in any way.

The best option, in our opinion is to look for something called a Creative Commons Zero licence (CC0).

‘A Creative Commons (CC) license is one of several public copyright licenses that enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted work.’

There are various different variations of Creative Commons which are explained further HERE . Some limit the use to non-commercial whilst others require attribution.

A CC0 allows for the images to be freely shared for personal and commercial use and doesn’t require attribution – In a nutshell, you can use them as you like!

We have put together some of our favourite sites that offer images under the free to use licence

Unsplash is a fantastic website offering free Hi-Res images from all around the world - They add 10 new images every week and all images are arranged in 'Collections' making it far easier to sift through the thousands available

Over 990000 high quality photos, illustrations, and vector graphics. Free for commercial use. No attribution required.

Pexels is a great resource aggregating images from various sources - Around 30,000 images - all great quality

Librestock is another site that searches other 'free to use' stock image sites and bring the results all together for you - A bit like a mini Google site for images 🙂

There are lots more sites out there that offer images under the Creative Commons Zero licence so don’t be afraid to get out there and have a root around, it’s not that difficult to find a suitable image that you can use free and legally on your website / blog.
